Dr Holly Faulkner

Holly聽has a Masters in International Law and Politics and a PhD in聽in Disaster, Risk & Resilience at the 茄子视频app官网. Holly has been involved in several disaster law projects including an IFRC project that mapped the disaster laws of Pacific nations. In 2019, Holly received a research grant from QuakeCoRE to investigate the 2019 rescEU mechanism and its relationship to supranationalism. Holly has recently joined the MaREI Centre as Senior Post-Doctoral researcher. As part of her role, she will be working on the DIRECTED project - a Horizon Europe project focusing on reducing vulnerability to extreme weather events and fostering disaster-resilient European societies. The project promotes interoperability of data, models, communication and governance on all levels and between all actors of the disaster risk management and climate adaptation process.聽

Dr Sulaiman Sarwary

Sulaiman is an experienced development practitioner with over 15 years of work in humanitarian and development sectors, underpinned by a background in law. He recently completed his PhD in聽Disaster Law, Risk, and Resilience聽at the 茄子视频app官网. His research examined how provisions for public engagement in the legal framework for Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Aotearoa New 茄子视频app官网shape public involvement. He currently serves as the Lead for International Development Programmes at Caritas Aotearoa New 茄子视频app官网(CAZN), where he oversees partner-led implementation in the Pacific and Southeast Asia in areas such as climate finance, disaster risk reduction, market driven skills, sustainable livelihoods and community resilience.

His research interests include institutional frameworks for DRM and the role of community in disaster recovery. He is co-authoring an article with Professor John Hopkins on the role of New Zealand鈥檚 National Emergency Management Agency in the management of COVID-19 pandemic. He is also working with Professor Annick and Dr. Ay艧e Mahinur Tezcan of Istanbul University on a study examining the unexpected decrease in violence against women following the 2023 Kahramanmara艧 earthquakes in T眉rkiye.聽
