Writing

Introduction

Writing is one of the most enduring forms of storytelling. Through writing we can express our thoughts and ideas in ways that help us explore and understand the world around us. It opens us up to discussion and exposes us to other perspectives and experiences.

With a degree in Writing you can develop your skills in any form of writing that fits your interests, from poetry to novellas, playwriting to travel writing, essays to content creation.

Courses

See also the major/minor in English or the minor in Creative Writing for the Bachelor of Arts, or the Bachelor of Communication with a strong focus on writing skills and career outcomes.

Writing major

The requirements for the Writing major in the Bachelor of Arts includes completing a total 105 points in WRIT courses, and at least 15 points chosen from a specific list of ENGL courses.

At each level you will complete compulsory courses and choose additional courses from the lists below which align with your writing interests. At least one of these choices must be from , and at least 30 points must be WRIT courses.

100-level

  • One 100-level WRIT course

Plus choose at least one course from these options:

  • DISC101 Storytelling for Digital Screen
  • TITO110 M膩ori Storytelling
  • Any 100-level WRIT course
  • Any 100-level ENGL course

200-level

  • Two 200-level WRIT courses

Plus choose at least one course from these options:

  • DISC201 Storytelling in Action
  • DISC212 Screenwriting: Research and Story Development
  • DISC222 Feature Screenwriting: The Treatment
  • DISC223 Creating Story Worlds
  • TITO201 Indigilit - Indigenous Literature in Aotearoa and Beyond
  • Any 200-level WRIT course
  • Any 200-level ENGL course

300-level

  • WRIT301 Writing with Impact
  • One course chosen from 300-level WRIT or ENGL courses

Writing minor

For the minor in the Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, Digital Screen, Health, Product Design, Psychological Science, Science, Social and Environmental Sustainability, Sport, or Youth and Community Leadership, complete the following courses:

  • 75 points in 100 to 300-level WRIT courses, with at least 45 points above 100-level

Postgraduate programmes in Writing

You may also consider general postgraduate studies in English or Media and Communication through a range of degrees up to PhD level.
